Selling Stock 3D Model Tips

Maximize Your Market

This may seem obvious, but it amazes me how many artists fail to do it. If you could potentially sell to five, six or seven times the number of buyers why wouldn't you do so?  This is what you're failing to do if you only sell in a single 3D file format.

Learn the 'dark arts' of format conversion.  This is knowledge that will serve you better than almost any other in the field of 3D stock.  Almost all 3D apps will let you 'export' and 'import' models using go-between formats, such as .obj or .3DS.  Learn to use them, and maximize your potential market.  Many great 3rd party conversion tools are also available.

Author your models with conversion in mind.  Avoid app specific material settings, such as procedural textures, or any material settings that will not export through the go-between formats, or your transfer tools.

Generally most tools (and formats) are fine with diffuse, specular, opacity and bump textures.  If you do have to re-setup materials in different formats, this will be far easier if your model has the minimum number of materials it can get away with.

Our favored go-between format is currently .obj.  This is a very old format, but has many mature plugins and tools for many modern 3D apps.  It seems to have benefited in recent years from being the main route in and out of ZBrush.  Other useful conversion formats include .DAE, .FLT and .3DS.  Be aware that there's many limitations with 3DS format, or at least the 3DSMax import plugin - such as a limit to 8.3 format texture names.

On the subject of market maximization, some of you may be wondering about our views on what 3D stock sites to sell on, an if you should be exclusive to one for a higher rate.  This is a subject for a post at a later date.  More soon . . .

MH-60R 'Strikehawk' helicopter of the US Navy (variant of the Blackhawk). Single 2048 x 2048 diffuse texture map, used on fuselage, glass and 'fast rotor' materials, plus similar sized specular map.

Texture Res: Single 2048 x 2048 diffuse map, plus specular map at same size.

This model comes with a choice of 3 main rotor sets;

1.) Static dropping rotors (shown in ground renders)

2.) Straight rotors (for animating with render motion blur)

3.) Alpha effect image based 'fast' rotors (shown in sky renders - fast alternative to motion- blur, or for use in games or simulations.)

Selling Stock 3D Model Tips

We're often asked for our top tips on selling stock 3D successfully.  Having been in the market since 1997 here's a condensed form of what we've learned so far.  More tips will be added each week.

Compete on quality, not on price

Can't stress this one enough, that's why it's number one.  Unless you're doing this, literally for pocket money, you can't generate worth-while sales by undercutting the market - though many seem to try.  Generally there will always be someone somewhere selling a model similar to yours, for less.  Don't try to compete with them on price.  Far better to compete with them on quality.  As a rule of thumb, for a given model category, you're far better off having having one model near the top of the quality tree than ten near the middle.

Massive 'organically grown' citys-cape. No building mesh repetition. Set uses 193 power of 2 res textures (used across multiple buildings). This model is light enough to be used for games or simulations, and is equally suited for pre-rendering for film or print. Contains over 5,000 unique buildings.

Scripting language used to generate this model is available for application to any arbitrary street system. If you have a real piece of urban terrain you need to recreate in 3D form, our scripts can build it for you at a fraction of the costs of traditional methods. Model can be created in days, rather than months. Please ask for details. Part of a huge linked collection available from ES3DStudios. Other sets from us re-use same texture set.

Model consists of 1,890,745 polygons spread over approx. 4km x 2km. Over 5k buildings. No mesh repetition.

3ds Max version (2013 or above) includes render set-up ready to recreate preview images 'out of the box'.

Please Note: Textures are supplied only in the 3ds Max and Maya MB zips - download one of these archives whatever format you require.

Texture Res:193 bmp textures in power of 2 resolutions. Mostly 256 square, some 512 and 512x256. An untextured version of this set is also available at a lower price.
